Let's be real, picking a makeup artist is scary business. We've all seen photos of wedding makeup gone wrong and heard horror stories about unprofessional artist ruining days. With all of the artists out there, its hard to know which one is the right one for you. Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life and you want to make sure you not only look your BEST but also have someone you can rely on. So I am here to tell you how to pick the perfect makeup artist for you and avoid the stress!
1. Ask around
There are a lot of ways to find the perfect makeup artist. You can read reviews, you can search on instagram, you can check out the local wedding websites. But the BEST way to find the perfect makeup artist for you is to ask around. Ask your friends and family about their
experiences with local artists. Your friends will be honest with you, they'll tell you if they loved the makeup artist they worked with or not. Your friend's feedback is probably more trustworthy than a random google review so don't be afraid to ask them!
2. Have a trial
When picking the perfect makeup artist you can't just rely on a portfolio, you need to experience the artistry first hand. We live in a time where altering photos on the internet is very easy, you can't always trust that what an artist posts online is an accurate representation of their work. If you have a trial you'll be able to make sure you like the artistry and the artist! You're going to be spending one of the most important days of your life with this person, make sure you like to be around them!
3. Make sure you're hiring a professional
You're going to be spending a lot of money on your makeup, make sure you're hiring a TRUE professional. There are a lot of great artists out there that do beautiful work. But things you should think about before spending your hard earned money: Are they reliable? Are they professional? Are they experienced? Are they licensed? These are important questions to ask before booking your wedding makeup artist. I can't tell you how many last minute calls I've received from panicked brides because their makeup artists cancelled on them with no backup! These are the types of situations you'll avoid if you hire an experienced professional.
4. Pick an artist that matches your style
Check out your potential artist's portfolio and go through it thoroughly! If you're a bride who likes dramatic makeup or a lot color make sure your makeup artist's portfolio has that! If you're a bride who likes a more toned down muted look, then maybe don't go to an artist that has a portfolio filled with color and sfx makeup. All artists have different areas of expertise, make sure you go to one that is an expert in the kind of makeup you love!
At the end of the day this is your special day. Make sure you love the way you look and you love the one helping you look your best!
